You’ve landed in the right place. Take a deep breath. We are anxiety therapists in New York and Long Island, and here to help you take that next step.
Do you need help with your anxiety?
You have your job, your kids, your relationship and your friendships. Everyone needs something from you and you only know how to say yes because you never let anyone down. And then there are things that keep happening. Just when you think life is going to settle, another crisis or project pops up demanding your response.
You used to "pull it together" and make your way through, but that isn’t working anymore.
It feels like your skin is crawling the moment you hop out of bed to when your head hits the pillow in the middle of the night after trying to sleep for hours. It feels like you could explode because there is just never a break in the anxiety you feel. The last time you tried to explain to someone what was going on they looked confused because you “look fine” to them. Now no one feels safe to talk to because no one seems to understand or be able to help.
You don’t have to carry it all.
Our clients have learned to cope with stress their entire life but along the way coping turned into anxiety. It shows up in how they feel in their body, their eating, their sleeping and it shows up in their relationships, their boundaries and their mood. Anxiety ends up sucking all of their energy.
At our practice, we help our clients understand what is happening and to practice skills for relief. Together we uncover the cause of their pain that has led to them feeling so anxious. We move from understanding, into coping and into healing.
Let us help you get off the spinning wheel of anxiety and step into life with more balance.
Now, if you’re wondering “What actually is Anxiety? ", read below
It is a common misconception that general feelings of anxiousness, worry, fear, restlessness, stress, or nervousness means automatic anxiety disorder, and that’s actually not exactly true. All humans experience nervousness from time to time, it simply means your mind and body are working hard to take care of you and help you navigate life.
Just like if you were to notice a car coming towards you, your body would tense up, and would propel you to honk your horn and/or swerve aside to keep you safe, your brains works similarly. When your body feels anxious or your mind sends your worrying thoughts, it’s a form of “alert”, letting you know a problem needs to be addressed.
There are many aspects at play when it comes to your anxiety. Genetics, environmental stressors, individual personality characteristics, trauma and psychiatric problems all contribute to the onset of anxiety symptoms. And at the same time, your anxiety can be treated.
If you think you might have an anxiety disorder, here are some signs to look out for:
GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) is only one diagnosis within the broader anxiety disorder category.
Other common anxiety disorders include;
Phobias
Panic Disorders
Social Anxiety
Separation Anxiety
Situational Anxiety
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
According to the American Psychiatric Association, these are the DSM-5 criteria that would
"red flag" a generalized anxiety disorder;
1. Excessive anxiety and worry more days than not for at least 6 months, about multiple things
(such as work and school performance).
2. Finding it hard to control worry (Like if you consider yourself worried all the time).
3. Anxiety and worry associated with three (or more) of the following six symptoms
Note: for children, it's worth getting a consultation if only one of the following symptoms are present:
Excessive Worrying
Restlessness irritability or "on edge" feelings.
Easily tired.
Hard time concentrating, mind going blank, or excessive "brain fog".
Increased irritability.
Muscle tension.
Anxiety Attacks and/or panicky feelings
Having a sense of dread, thinking bad things are about to happen
Avoiding situations that may cause you to be or feel anxious
Difficulty falling or staying asleep.
4. Anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms negatively effect social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
5. Above disturbance is not due to other factors.
I hope this gives you some more insight into what anxiety is, and isn’t. Now, we all have some anxiety, it’s when the levels get heightened that it may be time to reach out for some help.
