FAQs About Virtual Psychotherapy Sessions
Isn’t therapy via video or phone awkward? It seems like it would be impersonal.
At first, we were concerned virtual therapy wouldn’t feel as personal, and we would not be able to connect in the ways we do in person. We wondered if we’d be able to give the best care through online platforms. And, the feedback we got was that it worked! We've had clients have really focused sessions where we really zero in on the goals at hand, and were able to attain treatment gains just as if we were meeting in person. And actually for some, they found that the virtual aspect allowed them to deepen the work and connect in a different way than before. In fact research shows that tele-mental-health can be very effective.
What kind of therapy do you offer virtually? Are any of the modalities more challenging in virtual sessions?
Using a secure platform, we are able to work with people who live across New York State and offer high quality services tailored to your specific personal and emotional needs without much difference than in-person sessions. We offer Virtual EMDR therapy, talk therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, “parts work” and somatic mind-body focused healing. Obviously there are elements of the therapeutic process that are most effective using touch or face-to-face in-person connection, but overall we have found ways around those challenges and our clients have made tremendous progress even with those limitations.
How does a virtual therapy session work?
Online therapy has a lot of similarities to in-person sessions; we have set weekly time where we get to connect, focus on you, dive into our work together and help you gain stability, strength and clarity in your current life. You will receive a link every week that you simply click and then have access via video to your therapist. You’ll leave sessions feeling understood, heard and more able to navigate whatever it is you are facing.
What do you need as far as technology for virtual therapy?
You need a computer or phone and if possible an internet connection unless you want to use your data plan on your phone. It’s advised to use a headset to reduce distractions and to have added privacy during sessions.
If you are doing some art therapy or other expressive arts therapy, we send you some tools to help you do the work, here’s a video showing you some of the items we send your way to support your virtual counseling.
What’s the process to get started?
The process is very similar to in-person sessions.
To start, I encourage you to reach out for your free 15 minute consultation to be sure one of our therapists is the right fit for you.
On our initial call, I’ll be getting to know you, what you’re wanting help with, and you’ll get a sense of the therapist you’ll be working with, so you’re certain you feel as comfortable as possible {and yes a bit of hesitation is normal and expected} before diving in to the work together.
After your 15 minute consultation, we will email you a link to your client portal where you get to review our intake paperwork before your first session.
You’ll then get a link to a secure platform where you will log in at the time of your session. This link will be the link you’ll use every week at your session time. You’ll simply log in a few minutes before our session time, and your therapist will meet you there.
I know how to use Skype but I’m not so tech savvy and get nervous about new platforms. Do you have other options besides the video call platform you regularly use?
Telemental health or telebehavioral health virtual services are nothing new. For years now, therapists have been supporting clients remotely, typically utilizing HIPAA-compliant secure video conferencing or text-based messaging platform to protect your privacy. If you do know how to use Skype or another video conferencing platform you are likely familiar enough with the video call platform we use that you can learn quickly. We are here to walk you through the process, step by step so your video sessions can feel smooth and easy!
